Born in Tokat in 1949. After completing his hıfz (hafiz education), he studied talim, tajweed and qiraat from İsmail Bayrı Hodja in Istanbul. Graduated from Istanbul Imam Hatip High School (1971), Istanbul Higher Islamic Institute (1976). He worked as a muezzin and as a teacher of religious culture and ethics in Istanbul. He was sent to Saudi Arabia by the Presidency of Religious Affairs to conduct scientific research (1977). After graduating from the Institute of Arabic Language at King Abdulaziz (Umm al-Qura) University, he completed his master’s degree (1982) and doctorate (1989) in Tafsir and Hadith at the same university.
He was awarded “Outstanding Knowledge of the Qur’an” in the tafsir competition organized by this university and a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement by the university administration for his doctoral work. He made short-term studies in Germany, the Netherlands, Egypt and Japan and participated in various conferences and symposiums. He worked as a faculty member at Marmara University, Faculty of Theology, Department of Tafsir (1990-).
